Vegetable garden progress

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 24, 2008 by MartaFebruary 24, 2008

Garden in February

It was warm and sunny this weekend. Perfect for getting out into the garden especially after attending the Flower show. The delphiniums needed weeding. Something is is nibbling on the young growth. I sprinkled some Sluggo but I think it might be cutworms. I also fertilized the roses.

G worked on the raised beds for the vegetables. On Thursday, he hauled 26 wheelbarrows of planting mix to fill the beds. On Saturday, he constructed trellises for the peas and a teepee for the pole beans. They are ready now.

I had the fun of choosing the seeds. I poured over the websites of several companies but focused on what is available from Territorial Seeds, the best company for NW seeds. We will buy starts for some of the plants – mainly the warm plants like tomatoes and eggplants.

We had some purchases to make at a local store. We checked out the seeds and they had them 40% off. Yeah! I purchased beets, carrots, chard, radishes and wax beans. We have sugar snap peas and green beans from last year. I gave G a list of other vegetables to check at work. I want another type of pea, some different beans, cukes and lettuces.

We are ready to start planting. First will be the peas. We may start them inside this year since they didn’t germinate outside last year.

Here are a few pictures of the beds. Check out who had to inspect the beds!

Northwest Flower and Garden Show

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 23, 2008 by MartaFebruary 23, 2008

NW Flower and Garden Show 2008

It is the time again – for the flower show. Time to dream and plan for this years garden. Our friend from Spokane joined us again this year. We got there about 10am on Friday and it was already crowded.

We were disappointed this year. The exhibits have been more focused on patio design than the flowers. We did enjoy the display by Fancy Fronds as we did last year. It had a good sprinkling of tender perennials and interesting mixture of black and white plants. Otherwise, it was so-so.

Of course, we did pick up a few plants. G got three new orchids, a couple of arisemas and four epimediums.

Guilty Pleasures – Movies

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 21, 2008 by MartaFebruary 21, 2008

We all have them – movies that you always watch but don’t want to admit. They could be a movie so bad it is good or a movie that plays on a Saturday morning and you stop everything to watch. And you do it again next time it is on.

One of my guilty pleasure movies is on tonight – Muriel’s Wedding. I love this movie for so many reasons – the story, the location and most of all the music. Yes, Abba!

Another one is The Wedding Singer. I normally hate Adam Sandler but I love this movie. I seen it several times. I love the scene in the plane with Billy Idol.

And a really really bad movie that I love – Conan the Barbarian. So bad it is good and I love the Italian scenery.

On that note, I’ll leave you with a scene from Muriel’s Wedding.

Full Moon Eclipse

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 20, 2008 by MartaFebruary 20, 2008

Tonight was a total eclipse of the moon. This is the last one for my area until 2010. I wrote it off because it is February and I really didn’t expect it to be clear. The forecast was for cloudy skies.

After work, I headed for the grocery store to pick up some items for tonight’s dinner. Paella – I had to start using the 3 pounds of Italian rice that I bought at Costco. As I rolled my shopping cart back to the car, I looked up and realized that the skies had cleared. “I will be able to see the eclipse”, I thought.

When I got home I checked on the web for the times. For the Pacific coast, the eclipse would start around 5:30. The full eclipse the moon would happen at 7:01 and last for 55 minutes. I got the paella going, grabbed the tripod and set up the camera.

The clouds were lying low along the horizon and foothills to the east. I could see nothing at 6:15pm other than a faint aura of moonlight due east. Would it clear the clouds in time. 6:25… nothing… 6:30… nothing.

Whoa! there it was. The lower half was starting to darken. I stood shivering in the cold while snapping pictures. It was so real and mesmerizing.

At 7:01 the last sliver of disappeared and the moon turned into a glassy globe radiating red. After dinner, I sneaked out and slowly a sliver reappeared. It is now a glassy white globe shinning silverly light on the neighborhood.

Ah the wonder of nature.

Rigatoni with Cauliflower in Spicy Pink Sauce

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 18, 2008 by MartaNovember 13, 2014

rigatoni-001

I needed some comfort food tonight. I love baked pasta dishes. I found this recipe a while ago in Fine Cooking. I really like the flavor of cauliflower in the dish. It is nutty and goes really well with the flavor of the Fontina cheese.

I’ve modified the original recipe to reduce the amount the dish serves. The original makes a large amount that is too much for just two people so I cut the original in half. I’ve also adapted it to use prepared marinara sauce. I make large batches of marinara sauce and store it in the freezer in one cup containers.

One variation that I’ve considered is to add a few capers and I often make it a bit spicer by adding an additional 1/4 tsp of pepper flakes. You might also add a bit more cheese if you like it richer.

Rigatoni with cauliflower in spicy pink sauce
From Fine Cooking

2 cups Marinara sauce
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 lb rigatoni
2 cups cauliflower florets, cut into 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces
1 cup shredded Fontina
1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

Heat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a 7×11 inch baking pan with olive oil.

Combine the marinara sauce and cream in a large sauce pan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat and reduce to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 10 minutes until thickened. Add pepper flakes and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Meanwhile bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add rigatoni and cook about 10 minutes until it is al dente. Remove the pasta with a slotted spoon and add to the sauce. Add the cauliflower to the pasta water and cook until barely tender – about 2 minutes. Drain and add to the sauce.

Add 1/2 of the fontina to the pasta mixture and toss. Transfer to the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Top with the remaining fontina and the parmigiano.

Bake uncovered until the cheese is golden brown – about 15 minutes. Let rest about 5 minutes and serve.

Favorite Winter Walks in Seattle Area: Tour de Coal Creek

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 17, 2008 by MartaNovember 23, 2014

Finally a sunny day! We needed to get outside like everyone else. There has been a tremendous amount of snow here in the Northwest. Here are some pictures on Stevens Pass from the WA department of transportation. I’m so amazed to hear of over 100 inches of snow on Snoqualmie and Stevens. I mean, those are totals normal for Mt. Rainier.

So we hit the trail today. We decided to do Cougar which actually is a part of a Bellevue suburb. It is a King County Park and you can feel like you are miles away. That is except for the rifle sounds from a near by gun park. But it was still nice to get out and enjoy the sun. We even got up close and personal with a pair of deer.

Here are the photos:

Edmonds Waterfront Photo Walk

Travels with George and Marta Posted on February 16, 2008 by MartaFebruary 16, 2008

The color of the sky as far as I can see is coal grey.
Lift my head from the pillow and then fall again.
With a shiver in my bones just thinking about the weather.

Weather – 10,000 Maniacs

Another unpredictable weekend. The forecast was for sun but it has played hide and seek today. I did get a chance to drag myself away from the computer and I went for a walk along the Edmonds waterfront. The temps were around 50 degrees so I rolled up my sleeves and hoped to get some vitamin D. It was busy along the waterfront. Walkers and brave souls taking their boats out were out along the waterfront.

Come along with me on a walk along the waterfront.
