Photohunt: Mostly Black
This week’s Photohunt theme is Mostly Black. This was hard – especially hard to come up at the last minute. But my husband suggested an animal picture and I found these mostly black penguins. They are African penguins at Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town in the Western Cape region of South Africa. It is one of the few places you can get up close to penguins. As you can see below – it is a favorite of the tourists.

There doesn’t seem to be *too* many tourists on that scene. So… would you recommend a visit to Cape Town? One hears so much about the high crime rate (in South Africa in general) but OTOH, one also hears that people do tend to exaggerate about it.

YTSL – I would definitely recommend Cape Town and the Western Cape region. We did a self-tour 4 week trip in SA and Namibia and had absolutely no problems. We drove for most of the time also. You do need to be aware and we did not drive or walk after dark in Cape Town (took taxis). So if you use common sense – I would not expect any problems.
Those penguins are looking quite dapper as they ‘pose’ for the tourists. Great shot for this weeks theme 🙂

What cute little guys! I’ve visited some colonies of Fairy Penguins here in Australia, but it has been at night with the use of red spotlights. I hope to one day be able to see them entering or exiting the water at daylight/sunset.

I really love your take on the theme “mostly black”! How close could you get to them or did you use a long lens? Cool photos!
There was a boardwalk that took you out through their rookery. You could see them pretty close to where they were nesting higher up on the shore – close enough that it was pretty stinky. The last picture is at the end of the walk so I did have to take the surf pictures with the telephoto.
